Train Your Dog

Dogs are just like children.

They exhibit the intelligence of their master or parent.
Stupid children are a product of their parents. Silly dogs come from silly owners.

The problem is: You have to start from the beginning - as soon as you get your pet.
It's very hard to break bad habits, but not impossible.

You must have continuity and you must do the same tings each day in the same order.
Dogs are a creature of habit and you must DO and SAY the same tings each day so your pet will start to understand.

It all starts with food.
Don't leave food out.  Start by telling your pet it is food time by saying: "Come here." Then say: "Food Time."
Then say: "Where's your Dish?"
Put the food in the dish and stay close to the dish while holding the dish and allowing the dog to eat.
You then have a few very small biscuits that you add to the dish after the dog has eaten and put them in the dish.
This is designed to allow your dog to eat when you are present and touch his food without him getting angry.
You must never take away any food but you must have a dog that does not fear your presence and allows you to put your hand in the bowl and add food or move food without any anger.
Next:
"Let's go for a walk" or "walk"
I had to eventually spell W - A - L - K in a family conversation (so my dog didn't know), as he was listening for the word ALL THE TIME.

Train your dog not to pull on the leash with a choker chain (if necessary) and say: "Don't pull."
When-ever your dog starts to meet another dog, say: "Here's another doggie," as your dog tells from your voice that you are friendly and to act in a friendly manner.
If you don't, your dog will act aggressive as he thinks he is trying to protect you.

Here are some of the basic commands you can teach your dog:

Come here
Stay
Sit
Open the door – including a sliding door.
Get in the car
Go around   -  to untie his lead around a pole or bucket etc.
Come in   -  you can say this very quietly and your dog will always hear the command.
NO  -   if he comes into a room, at the wrong time or too soon, you simply have to say NO quietly, and he will go back to his bed.
WAIT  - he goes away and waits.
There’s food in your dish – he goes to his dish.
No more – feeding him food etc and when you say No More, he instantly leaves.
Do you want a bickie? – your dog instantly gets excited and goes to the kitchen.
Hop in the car  - he knows you are going out in the car.
Whistle  - he always comes on a whistle.
NO  He doesn’t walk on a new lawn etc . You only had to tell him once.
Take it outside  - such as a bone etc

You must be able to hand feed your dog by putting food into his mouth and he only takes it with his lips.
That's why you have a word such as NO.   He knows he is doing something wrong if he grabs the food.
You must make sure your dog eats and takes food meekly and gently from your hand (fingers).
You can also go to the extent of saying NO or WAIT when you put food out and your dog will wait for the command "OK"   In the meantime you can add food and that's the reason he has to wait.
You must have total control over your dog eating food.

Take your dog out each morning and night for a walk.
This will prevent him peeing in the house.
Stop walking when he pees to show this is accepted by you.

These are all things a dog understands and it is the ignorance of the owner that allows a dog to misbehave.

Once you train your dog with a first command, the other commands will be easy.
A dog wants to be instructed and make sure the instructions are by words and not actions as this will encourage your dog to listen for the spoken word.
Of course there are lots more things you can train your dog to do. These are just the essential beginnings.
