Model Railway
kits |
Let's look at the Model Railway kits |
Talking Electronics.com has produced a number of projects for Model
Railway enthusiasts over a period of 35 years and is the largest
producer of kits in Australia.
All the projects have been designed by us and are available at very
low-cost.
Some of the projects are available ready-made and will be soldered when
you order them.
The kits are presented alphabetically to make them easy to find.

CAPACITOR DISCHARGE
1.
Capacitor
Discharge Units (CDU's) are designed to operate "Points" or "Turn-outs"
that have an electromagnet (2-solenoids) to move the rails to suit the
direction you want the train to travel. These solenoids must be operated
for a very short period of time as they take a high current and will get
very hot. CDU's do this.
2.
If you have a mechanical point (hand operated) you can convert it to
"automatic" or remotely controlled by using one of our Point Motor
Control Projects.
They all have different
features and you have to look at them all the work out which one you want.
3.
We also have projects that automatically change the points via Infra Red
(IR) beams.
Capacitor
Discharge Unit MkII |
K-CDU2 |
$10.60 |
See
Capacitor
Discharge Unit MkII
Project.
Can switch any number of model train points or solenoids, one at a
time.
This
project operates a Pico/Hornby solenoid.
|
Capacitor
Discharge Unit MkIIB |
K-CDU2B |
$12.50 |
See
Capacitor Discharge Unit MkIIB
Project.
Can switch any number of model train points or solenoids, one at a
time.
Has terminal block for input and out to make fitting easy. 4,400u
This
project operates a Pico/Hornby solenoid.

Capacitor
Discharge Unit -
inLine version |
K-CDU-inLine |
$8.50 |
This
project comes with a toggle switch and it can be mounted
side-by-side on your control console. 2,000u
The wiring of this unit is shown in

Post $6.50 |
Comes
with switch.
Point indication shown on board via red and green LEDs.
This project operates a Pico/Hornby solenoid.

The following project takes a manual "point" and changes it into an
"automatic point" (or remotely controlled point) by using a
motor and gears from a servo
to activate the point. (The servo becomes a "motorised gearbox".)
Point Controller
for Motor and Gearbox |
K-PointMotor/Gearbox |
$15.50
Post $6.50 |
This
project converts a manual point into remotely controlled point
by using a servo with the electronics removed.
It turns the output clockwise or anticlockwise for a very short
period of time and this changes the point. The position of the
point is shown on a red and green LED. |
The next POINT CONTROLLER projects include an automatic
feature. The point is changed by the train being detected by an IR beam.
The only difference is the activating device.
Point Controller -
Solenoid |
K-PC-solenoid |
$20.00
Post $4.50 |
This
project automates your pico/Hornby point-motor.
It toggles between straight-through and siding and sets the
point from the opposite direction. |
Point Controller -
Servo |
K-PC-servo |
$25.00
Post $6.50 |
This
project converts a manual point into automatic and toggles between straight-through and
siding and sets the point from the opposite direction. |
Point Controller -
Motor/Gearbox |
K-PC-motor/gearbox |
$16.50
Post $6.50 |
This project
uses a very small motor and worm drive to activate the point.
You have to add the linkage to do this. |
